Scott Newgent

Detransitioner and campaigner

Scott Newgent is an American detransitioner who says homophobia, a trans-identified therapist and an unverified intersex diagnosis led her into a double transition that nearly killed her. She is due to address the UK Parliament on 21 October, warning MPs that any conversion therapy ban must not criminalise the exploratory therapy the NHS's Cass Review recommended, while leaving affirmation-only care unchallenged.

Scott Newgent is an American detransitioner who has become one of the most prominent voices warning that so-called gender-affirming care can function as conversion therapy for gay and lesbian young people. On the episode "Trans Away The Gay: Gender-Affirming Care IS Conversion Therapy | Scott Newgent", she tells Beyond Gender host Mia Hughes how growing up gay in a homophobic environment, encouragement from a trans-identified therapist, and an intersex diagnosis she says was never properly tested combined to push her into transitioning from female to male.

The double transition, a mastectomy followed by phalloplasty, left Newgent with severe, life-threatening medical complications requiring dozens of corrective surgeries. She has since detransitioned and now campaigns publicly against the medicalisation of gender-questioning young people, arguing that clinicians who skip exploratory psychotherapy in favour of immediate affirmation are failing exactly the gay and lesbian patients who most need it.

Her story lands directly on the questions this site exists to cover. The NHS closed the Tavistock's Gender Identity Development Service after the Cass Review found an evidence base too weak to justify the affirmation-only model Newgent experienced in the US, and English gender services are still working out what exploratory, needs-led care should look like in practice. Newgent is due to address the UK Parliament on 21 October, where she plans to warn MPs that proposed conversion therapy legislation could end up criminalising the very exploratory therapy the Cass Review called for, while leaving medical transition itself unexamined.

For British listeners following the law through Westminster and the practice through the NHS, Newgent's testimony is a reminder that the debate is not abstract: it is about what happens to a gay teenager sitting in a gender clinic waiting room.
